Windows Server 2022 vs 2025: Licenses, CALs & What Hosting Providers Need
Tabla de Contenidos
Windows Server licensing is the part of a hosting quote that surprises people — it’s per-core, and remote desktop means CALs. If you’re standing up a Windows box for ASP.NET, RDS, or SQL workloads, here’s what changes between Server 2022 and Server 2025 and what you actually have to buy. We sell both at $10/seat.
What changed from 2022 to 2025
Server 2025 is the Long-Term-Channel successor to 2022’s SAC-blessed mainstream release. Same licensing model, faster hardware baselines (AVX-512 paths, SMB over QUIC, Hotpatch on Azure), and a longer support runway. If you’re buying new today, 2025 is the safe default; 2022 remains rock-solid and is where most existing hosts sit.
| Topic | Server 2022 | Server 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing model | Per core (+ CALs) | Per core (+ CALs) |
| Support status | Mainstream ended, extended support | Current, longest runway |
| Best fit | Existing 2022 fleets, app compatibility | New deployments, extended life |
The three things you buy
1. The server license (per core)
Windows Server Standard vs Datacenter differ on virtualization rights (Standard: limited VMs; Datacenter: unlimited). Most hosting needs Standard unless you’re running dense VM farms.
2. RDS CALs if users log in remotely
The two built-in admin sessions aren’t a product license. If customers or staff RDP in, you need Remote Desktop Services CALs per user or device. This is the most common thing hosts forget.
3. SQL Server if the app needs it
Windows Server includes no database engine. SQL Server Standard/Express is a separate license — see our SQL Server keys.

How a $10 Windows Server key fits
We supply genuine Windows Server 2012–2025 media keys, including Server 2025 and Server 2022, at $10 each — the same activation path as any retail key. That covers the OS license; you still handle CALs and virtualization rights per your Microsoft agreement and actual usage. For a single-purpose server or a control-panel VM, that’s usually all you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need CALs for a web hosting server?
If users authenticate against it (RDS, Active Directory logon, file/print), yes. A public website serving anonymous visitors does not consume CALs.
Is Server 2025 a big upgrade over 2022?
Incremental for most hosts: same admin model, better hardware and security defaults. Buy 2025 for new installs; keep 2022 where it already runs.
Can I run Windows Server in a VM on one license?
Virtualization rights depend on Standard vs Datacenter and your core licensing. Datacenter is the unlimited-VM tier.
What about Windows 11 / 10 desktop keys?
Those are separate — see Windows 11 and Windows 10 for client licenses.
Conclusion
Pick Server 2025 for new Windows hosting, count your RDS users before you forget CALs, and buy the OS from someone who won’t overcharge you for it. Windows Server 2025 is $10/seat with us; 2022 and older editions are the same price.
